Mysterious Champers of Lahore Fort that are Kept Hidden from Public

You must have visited the Lahore Fort a.k.a. Shahi Qila, but have you ever wondered what you visit is just the terrace of that fort and main champers of that fort are protected and not open for public. Stories of secret champers and basements of Lahore fort always fascinate. There do exist tunnels and torture cells beneath basements. Allow me to show you one such basements called summer palace, and in my next post I will you show you torture cells followed by a post on secret tunnels of Lahore Fort.

Summer Palace used to be a private chamber for the Kings and Queens. It is also called Pari Mahal or Fairy Palace but since it is hidden from public not much information is available on the internet. This palace lies beneath Sheesh Mahal. When you enter in this chamber, you would hardly see anything until your eyes familiarize with the dim lights that enter from small windows which is only source of light.

Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan built this palace as a summer house for the royals. It keeps the place warm in winters and cold during summers. It is designed in such a way that it could have been also used as a secret escape route. One end of this tunnel opens to the Ravi River which used to flow near this fort during those times. Boats for royal family used to be parked near this tunnel in order to escape.

Walls and ceilings of the Summer Palace were once decorated with silver, gold and fresco paintings that were looted later, but some of the paintings and artwork can still be seen. Overall palace is designed in such a way that it produces an extra ordinary echo of sound which means if you are standing in one corner of the palace, your sound could be heard easily in the last corner of this palace.

There is also a mezzanine floor that was used to watch over the troops, and forty two water cascades along with fountain systems. It is no less complex than a maze, which could have been designed in order to confuse troops of foes in attack situations.

In my next post, I will show you torture cells of Lahore Fort.
